Event Information

Enjoy one of NSW’s most unique running festivals. Be immersed in the hospitality and warmth of a thriving rural community and seize the special opportunity to run ‘around the world’. Whether choosing the 5km, 10km or 21.1km race, runners will journey past animals from all over the globe at the famous Taronga Western Plains Zoo as well as following the course of the Macquarie River as it meanders peacefully through town, should the half marathon be the challenge.

5.5km Dingo Dash

The Dingo Dash offers walkers and runners alike a fun day out with family and friends to safari through the Taronga Western Plains Zoo taking in the sights and sounds of animals from around the world.

10km Cheetah Chase

Whether a 10km running race specialist or aiming to achieve the 10km milestone, all runners will enjoy the Cheetah Chase; a loop ‘around the world’ at the Taronga Western Plains Zoo as well as venturing outside towards the historic Dundullimal Homestead before returning to the animals.

21.1km Zebra Zoom

Rise to the challenge and take on the 21km half marathon run. Relatively flat, the Zebra Zoom offers the opportunity for fast times whilst following the course of the Macquarie River through town with a loop of the world class Taronga Western Plains Zoo to finish the race.

Race Start Times:

Zebra Zoom 21.1 km – 7.00am
Cheetah Chase 10km – 7.15am
Dingo Dash 5.5km – 7.30am

Drink Stations

Drink stations for the running festival will be located around the zoo at the 2km, 3km, 4km mark and the finish line.  Outside of the zoo drink stations will be located approximately every 2 kilometres.  That means a total of 4 drink stations for the Dingo Dash 5.5km, 6 drink stations for the cheetah chase 10km, and 12 drink stations for the Zebra Zoom 21.1km event.

Parking

There is a large parking area within the zoo grounds allocated to Dubbo Stampede entrants.  Once participants enter through the main gates, the two carparks on the right hand side are assigned for runner’s vehicles.  There will be car park attendants to direct to parking.  Overflow parking will be located on the large grass corner of Newell Highway and Obley Road. Car park attendants will be present to direct to the overflow parking.

First Aid

There will be a first aid station at the start / finish area within the zoo grounds, another at the 15km mark, co-located with the drink station, plus roving first aid staff in a compact utility buggy.  All first aid personnel will be fitted with 2-way radios to enable quick response to any incident.

Wet Weather Running Plan

You get wet!  The Dubbo Stampede Running Festival will be held regardless of the weather.  The Dingo Dash 5.5km and the Cheetah Chase 10km events are to be held on fully sealed bitumen roads.  For the Zebra Zoom Half Marathon, in the situation where there is significant rain leading up to the event, there are alternate by-passes routes that will steer runners clear of any potential boggy areas of the unsealed sections of the running circuit.

Volunteers

The Dubbo Stampede offers the opportunity not only for runners but also for volunteers. The greater the volunteer swell, the greater the efficiency and smooth running of this premier event. This is a great opportunity for community groups, school groups, sporting organisations...anyone, to actively contribute to a great community event, providing support and encouragement to those who pass your post! There are a vast amount of volunteer opportunities including manning drinks stations, marshalling and helping around the precinct. There is such joy in encouraging others in their dreams and pursuits. Be an integral part of this special community event by volunteering. Contact the Dubbo Stampede.

Toilets

There are toilets located at the start / finish point, the 2km mark, 4km mark,  12km drink station, 15km drink station, 16km mark, and at 17.5km distance along the running route.

How to get to the Zoo

Head west through Dubbo along Cobra Street and across the L.H Ford Bridge, over the Macquarie River. Turn left at main roundabout off bridge and continue past McDonalds and the Golf Club before arriving at the Taronga Western Plains Zoo on the left (Obley Road); a total distance of 3 km once off the bridge.

Whilst you’re in town for the Dubbo Stampede why not take some time to experience the Taronga Western Plains Zoo. The Zoo is home to 700 animals which hail from every corner of the globe including the critically endangered Black Rhino and Giraffe to African Elephant and Galapagos Tortoise. Alternatively see the new Savannah Visitor Plaza and free access area where you can grab a bite to eat, let the kids run wild in the playground or watch the Spider Monkeys and Ring Tailed Lemurs for free.

The Zoo is offering Dubbo Stampede participants discounted entry to the Zoo for a one day visit with adults $19 each, children 4 – 15 years $9 each and children under four free. The offer is valid on Saturday 1 September 2012 and Sunday 2 September 2012 only.
